OQ 2020: Aussie men, Kiwi women qualify directly (9/8/2019)

Australia (men) and New Zealand (women) booked direct berths to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics by emerging Oceania Cup champions on Sunday.

The men got the better of New Zealand 3-0 in the final match of the series in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia. The result sealed the three-match series 2-0 for the Kookaburras who won the first 4-0 and drew the second 2-2.

The New Zealand women drew their series with Australia 1-1 but pipped the Hockeyroos on goal difference. The Black Sticks won the first match 3-1 lost the second 2-3 and drew the third 1-1. With all continental championships decided, the FIH is set to conduct the draw for the 14-team qualifiers at its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Monday (September 9) at 4.30pm (IST). FIH CEO Thierry Weil will conduct the draw and it will be streamed live on the FIH Facebook page.

The pots for the draw, taking into consideration the latest rankings are set as: Men Pot 1 (Host teams):

(5) Spain
(6) New Zealandv

(14) Russia (after Egypt withdrew)

The draw will be done as follows:
• The teams ranked 1st, 2nd and 3rd (pot 1) will be drawn at random to play at home against one of the teams ranked 12th, 13th or 14th (pot 4). For example, the team ranked 1st will play at home one of the teams ranked 12th, 13th or 14th, as determined by the draw

• The teams ranked 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th (pot 2) will be drawn at random to play at home against one of the teams ranked 8th, 9th, 10th or 11th (pot 3).

The Indian men and women will play at home. The men, in pot 1, could face one of Pakistan Austria or Russia (who stepped in for Egypt who withdrew) in pot 4.

The women in pot 2, could play one of Korea, Belgium, USA and Canada in pot 3.

Besides Australia, Belgium, Argentina and South Africa qualified as European, Pan American and African champions while Japan qualified on two counts as hosts and Asian Champions in the men’s section, thus freeing up a spot which extended the qualifying field to 14 nations. The FIH Pro League and FIH Series Finals along with world rankings were also factors in determining the field for the qualifiers.

New Zealand were joined by The Netherlands, Argentina, South Africa qualified as European, Pan American and African champions with Japan, exactly like the men, also qualifying on two counts. The qualifiers will be playoffs over two legs with the higher ranked nations playing hosts. The FIH Hockey Olympic qualifiers are scheduled for 25-27 October and 1-3 November 2019. The exact match schedule and venues will be confirmed after the draw.

The 2020 Olympic hockey tournaments will be staged in Japan’s capital city from 25 July to 7 August next year and involve 12 Men’s and 12 Women’s teams.
