2008: Junior Selection Trials underway at Bhopal

Selection Trails for the under 21 team has commenced at Bhopal. All the five selectors – Ajit Pal Singh, Aslam Sher Khan, Ashok Kumar, Zafar Iqbal, Dhanraj Pillay – have witnessed a session in the evening of Wednesday.

Two more sessions will be held on Thursday before the team is finalized. The team composition is expected to be announced in Delhi a couple of days later.

A 20-member team is likely to be selected for the Pakistan Test Series, which will commence next month 10th. . The series is another earnest effort from both the sides to prepare for the Next year’s World Cup. In all five matches will be placed in different cities, starting from Karachi on 10th.

The camp in Bhopal will continue upto 3rd Nov. The team will again assemble in Punjab on 6th before crossing the border at Wagah.

The series assumes significance in view of the fact that India are at present better ranked team in the category while Pakistan hockey administration is geared up to improve its lot in the wake of disastrous performance of its national team in Beijing. It is even expected the series might be telecast live, as Pakistan Hockey Federation has recently made TV inroads.

Indian juniors last assignment was Junior Asia Cup held at Hyderabad in May this year. While India won the event, Pakistan finished third. Both the team played the semifinals where India emerged the victors.
