26th Surjit Hockey Cup to start from October 23
DOMESTIC HOCKEY: 26th Edition of the Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey Tournament will be held here at local Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium, Burlton Park, from 23 to 30 October.
According to Mr. Ajeet Singh Pannu, President of Surjit Hockey Society, who is also the Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar that the tournament is organized in the sweet memory of Late S. Surjit Singh, Olympian.
Surjit SIngh, former Captain, met with an accident near Jalandhar on January 7, 1984 and the tournament is tribute to the departed soul from his fans and admirers.
All top teams of the country along with a Pakistani team will take part in this tournament. They include reigning Champion Punjab & Sind Bank, Runners Up, Javed Hockey Club Gojra , Pakistan, Air India Mumbai, Bharat Petroleum Mumbai, Indian Oil Corporation Mumbai, Punjab Police Jalandhar, Indian Air Force Delhi, Namdhari Eleven, Border Security Force Jalandhar, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Dehradun, Rail Coach Factory Kapurthala, E.M.E. Jalandhar, Corps of Signal Jalandhar, Punjab National Bank Delhi, Central Reserve Police Force Delhi.
These teams have been finalized after considering the report submitted by team selection committee comprising of Padma Shree Pargat Singh, Lakhvinder Pal Singh, Amrik Singh Powar and Iqbal Singh Sandhu. The organizing committee has also decided to increase the cash prize for the finalist, Mr. Pannu added. The tournament will be played league cum knock out basis.
According to Iqbal Singh Sandhu Hony. Org. Secretary of the tournament, that society has also decided to honour NRI Sports promoter, Punjabi Folk Singer and promoter of hockey for their achievements on the final day of the tournament. A committee comprising of L.R. Nayyar, Jagjit Puri, Bhupinder Singh Makkar, Smt. Sarojini Shardha, S.P.S. Marar and Gurpreet Khehra has been constituted.
The arrangements have been made for the Live Telecast of semifinal and finals on PTC NEWS and PTC CHANNEL.
Deputy Chief Minister Punjab and newly elected President of the Hockey Punjab will give away the prizes while Mr. Manoranjan Kalia, Minister for Local Bodies and Industries will inaugurate the tournament. All the matches of the tournament will be played under the FLOOD LIGHTS, Mr. Sandhu added.
