Five Schools Subscribe to the One Thousand Hockey Legs Program

Delhi based Hockey Citizen Group’s (HCG) ‘One Thousand Hockey Legs’ Program takes a firm step in the Southern City of Puducherry, with Five Schools expressing willingness to join the novel initiative.

HCG Volunteers from Delhi and Bangalore recently visited Puducherry and met Principals of select seven schools. Their mission was to explore possibility of these institutions introducing hockey in their premises.


The HCG offered equipment and technical support if these schools are interested enough to put in place a system by which at least 30 students regularly play hockey.

The HCG Headquarters in Delhi recently received confirmation from four Schools while another school has indicated their willingness, written acceptance is expected shortly.

According to K. Manickam, Project Officer for the Puducherry leg of operations, equipment (Sticks, balls, etc) will be distributed to the above five schools once the vacation is over.

It is expected the distribution will take place in the beginning of the second week of January. HCG was given an understanding that the schools are in the process of distributing the equipment during the morning assembly sessions in the presence Principal and a dignitary from the HCG.

The Schools taking up hockey in Puducherry at the initiative of HCG include Vivekananda Higher Secondary School in Lawspet, Vivekananda Higher Secondary School in Thirubuvanai, Government Higher Secondary School, Kuruvinatham and Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School, Vanarapet.

Petite Seminare Senior Secondary School will join the School Hockey Family shortly.


“We highly appreciate your effort and initiate to form “One Thousand Hockey Legs” in Puducherry and we are delighted to be part of your programme’, said SA Lourdusamy, Principal of the Amalorpavam HSS.

“We assemble to do our best to promote the game in our school’, he assured in a letter to the HCG.

HCG is soliciting services of coaches through outsourcing concept to meet the requirement, besides according top priority to each school’s Physical Education faculty.

Equipment has been made available from a central pool, has already reached Puducherry.

Hockey Citizen Group has been formed recently with an aim to inculcate a hockey culture in the country. The primary objective of the novel group is to start hockey teams in schools to train and educate them hockey sport and its culture. ‘One Thousand Hockey Legs’ is the first project of the Group. At least five school hockey teams will be started in each major cities of India under the unique program.

Fantastic effort…. Pls make a survey of hockey belts in India where hockey is dying… and pls do something there too … to keep hockey going…..Make sure that at least 5-10 schools play hockey in each district… and then further broad basing….all the best..

Dear Stoneman, thank you for the suggestion. Do you have in mind any particular place or area where hockey was prevalent but now dying, which needs school level work? IF specific info is there, I will suggest this to the Hockey Citizen Group. Cheers
