India wins bronze, defeating China 2-1 in the First Asian Champions Trophy for women.

Details of bronze medal match

India came from behind to upset world number three China 2-1 and win the bronze medal in the inaugural Asian Women Champions Trophy Hockey at Busan, South Korea today.

Wang Mengyu gave China the lead from a penalty corner in the 16th minute but Saba Anjum got the equaliser in the 24th minute while skipper Surinder Kaur scored the match winner for India with a 63rd minute penalty corner.

India, ranked thirteenth in the world, had lost all its three round robin matches earlier to Japan, China and the hosts South Korea.

However they produced their best today with good attacking combines between Rani Rampal, Saba Anjum, Surinder Kaur, Jasjeet Kaur Handa and Soundarya Yendala.

The Indian defence also stood out as Subhadra Pradhan, Binita Toppo and Joydeep Kaur foiled numerous Chinese attacks thus ensuring India third place.

In the last match of the league, Korea defeat India 5-3 (HT 2-1). For India, Saba Anjum (24″, PC), Rani Ramphal (55″, FG) and Subadhra Pradhan ( 67″, PC)scored.

China beat India 6-1 (Deepika Thakur)
Korea drew with Japan 2-2.
