Suresh Kalmadi, chairman, IOA’s ad-hoc committee on hockey, surprised today when announced that selection committee member Ajit Pal Singh will replace Aslam Sher Khan as Chairman of the Selection Committee.

Perhaps having a wind of the things, Aslam Sher Khan did not attend today’s proceedings.

Aslam was the face of hockey after the IOA dissolved the KPS Gill led IHF. Therefore, the news did not go well with the media. Sensing the mood, a former selector said, “They could have done it atleast after a year”

The ad-hoc committee went overdrive today having a series of meetings. Therefore, it was expected vital decisions will be announced.

However, Suresh Kalmadi’s announcement that Ajit Pal Singh is the new Selection Committee Chairman in place of Aslam Sher Khan belied the expectations, and also diverted the issue.

In fact, the turn around in the fourtunes of Aslam Sher did not surprise at least a few in view of the fact that he was getting all attention since KPS Gill left the scene. As most of the selection committee members were from the 1975 world cup squad, and Aslam being the junior member of the team, others were also not happy to ‘work under’ him despite the back their previous chairman was KPS Gill, and they had no qualms about working under him. This site will however details the exact reasons behind it around 20.00 hrs today.

Suresh Kalmadi reasoned: “We will follow a rotation system. As per this Aslam Sher will remain the member of the committee while Ajit Pal will be its chief”.
