Oilmen meet in grand finale
Bangalore: Championship contenders Indian Oil mauled PCTC 8-1 to put themselves just a draw away from the Super Division hockey title at SAI Centre here on Saturday.
Raghunath’s goal off a penalty corner in the very second minute opened the floodgates for IOCL. Raghu converted another penalty corner in the 47th minute as his team looked for goals as a buffer during their title clash against Bharat Petroleum on the morrow.
Deepak Thakur (17th, 57th) and Prabhjot Singh (19th, 41st) found the net on two occasions. Rajpal Singh (52nd), Hamza Mujtaba (59th) struck once apiece while Kujur SP (64th) scored the consolation goal for PCTC.
As things stand, both Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum have 22 points from eight matches. However, IOCL stand to gain immensely by their handsome goal difference of plus 26 (34 goals for and eight against). A draw should help them regain the title. BPCL, who have a goal difference of plus 18 (29 goals for and 11 against), need nothing less than a win to retain the crown.
Army Red, who finished their league engagements with 19 points are assured of the third spot.
In the other matches, BPCL beat Fortis 4-2, while KSP defeated ASC 3-1.
