India’s first gold medal has upped interest in the Olympics. BT asks sportspersons what they’re following at the Beijing games
EVEN as India celebrates shooter Abhinav Bindra’s success at the Beijing Olympics, Saina Nehwal has moved to the quarter-finals of the women’s singles badminton championship. BT asks Bangalore’s former Olympians and sportspersons what sport they’re keeping a watch on.
Ashish Ballal, former hockey champ:
I’m, of course, following hockey closely. I’m also waiting to see what Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi do on the courts. I’m curious to see if US swimmer Michael Phelps beats the record. Bindra winning the gold was a special moment for India. I’ve been on the podium and know how it feels to stand up there with the national anthem playing. It was incredible to see this young guy act so cool, composed and mature.
