Great Britain is tactically a strong side. The Indians have always nurtured an unwanted complex against the English sides. Be careful, take things seriously”, cautions Avtar Singh Burji who represented Uganda at the 1972 Olympic hockey.

The London based player turned coach Avtar is in India on private visit and after having seen live telecast of both the Matches India played so far, he is not enthusiastic about Indian performance at Chile.

“There seems to be much of selfish play from the Indians, which is at the cost of team’s interest. How easily they are dispossessed even by not so great outfit like Austria. The goals India conceded in the first half should be a warning for the team aiming to get its berth against seeming a formidable rival like Great Britain. British team is strong, would punish even the smallest of mistakes of their rivals”.

Apthar won’t take sides on either team. “Both teams are good, equal, and their presence would have enhanced the quality Olympics. Ultimately, the tactically equipped team is going to have its say on March 9”.

He, as a coach, has this to say about India. “Dilip Tirkey is experienced, he is good, but his scanning and hitting needs re-look. He probably takes more time than needed before passing. Winger Rajpal Singh has to change his outlook, why can’t he part the ball at the first opportunity. He holds too long and makes all sorts of mistakes. I watched Champions Challenge Cup at Boom. India scored four goals in no time, but conceded the match almost in the second half. How was that possible? The English could spread your defence to their advantage”.

“Great Britain goalkeeper won’t allow direct hits in the penalty corners. He is well experienced. India certainly have problem in penalty corners. I can’t understand why Sandeep Singh is not there at Chile”.

When learnt that Diwakar Ram is also not there, Avtar had to just say this: “You really have a problem on hand. Is there nobody to compromise between the coach and this player?”

And, that is the million dollar question.
