Punjab Sports Club has won the 2021 Calcutta Hockey League. In its last match it beat ERSA 2-1; with this it made a total of 4 wins and draw and finished at the top of the table.
PREVIEW OF THE LAST MATCH
Punjab need a win to assure themselves of the Calcutta Premier League hockey title on Thursday.
They play CESC in the concluding match of the six-team league, revived after 19 years. Punjab are on 10 points and victory will give the table leaders 13 points from five matches which will put themselves in an unassailable position.
The nearest rivals East Bengal are on eight points going into their final encounter against ERSA. If Punjab win as expected, the best East Bengal could hope for is runners-up position.
If Punjab falter and draw or lose they must hope that ERSA either draw or beat East Bengal. If East Bengal win and Punjab draw, a deadlock on points will be broken by the former’s far superior goal difference.
CESC (six points) have a lot to play for and can well finish runners-up with victory over Punjab if East Bengal lose. If East Bengal draw, however, they tie on points with CESC and will most likely take the runners-up slot on goal difference which is overwhelming in favour of the former at the moment.
ERSA are on three points and eye third spot with victory over East Bengal if the other result goes in their favour.
Calcutta Port Trust have finished their engagements and are on seven points and can only hope for third spot if CESC lose to or draw with Punjab.
