Chandigarh: The Punjab Sports Department has proposed to organize the Chief Minister International Cup in December. The date and venue will be decided after receiving a communication from the concerned Indian sports federation.

Disclosing this here on Saturday, sports director, Punjab, Pargat Singh said that discussions were going on with ad hoc hockey committee, All India Football Federation and Wrestling Federation of India.

This year the CM International Cup will be hosted in only one discipline. More disciplines may be included next year. Punjab Sports Minister Gulzar Singh Ranike has sent the proposed sports calendar for 2008-2009 to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for approval.

According to Pargat Singh, besides sending the state contingents for the National Women Sports Festival in all groups (I, II and III), the Punjab Sports Department will also play host to the National Women Sports Festival in kho-kho, gymnastics, volleyball and kabaddi at Gurdaspur from November 12 to 15.

The Punjab Sports Department will also celebrate the National Sports Day at Jalandhar on August 29. The Sports Day is celebrated on the occasion of birthday of hockey wizard Dhyan Chand.With a view to spotting talent in rural area, the department has chalked out various rural competitions for boys and girls from block to state level tournaments.

Similarly, various tournaments for panchayats from block to state level have been proposed in the sports calendar for 2008-9. Hockey league for boys and girls in various age groups will be organised from July 2008 to January 2009.The week-end matches for boys in age groups of under-13, 14, 16 and 19 will be played at Jalandhar, Amritsar and Ludhiana.

The hockey league for girls under-15 and above 15 years will be conducted at Ludhiana, Amritsar and Badal.It has also been proposed to organize the All India Civil Services Lawn Tennis Tournament. Dates and venue will be decided later.Calendar: Block level rural tournament for boys and girls under-16 from August 10 to 31.

Disciplines: athletics, hockey , kabaddi, volleyball and football.District level rural tournament for boys and girls under-16 at district headquarters from September 5 to 17 in athletics, archery, basketball, tug of war, hockey , kabaddi, kho-kho, weightlifting, volleyball, wrestling and football.District level Panchayat tournaments in athletics, hockey , kabaddi, volleyball, football from September 5 to 17.Punjab State Rural Games for boys under-16 in athletics, archery, tug of war, hock ey, kabaddi, kho-kho, weightlifting, volleyball, wrestling and football in Mansa from September 27 to 30.Punjab state Rural Games for girls under-16 in athletics, archery, hockey , kabaddi, weightlifting, volleyball and wrestling at Moga from October 25 to 27.Punjab State Panchayat Tournament for Men in athletics, football, hockey , kabaddi and volleyball in Amritsar from November 23 to 25.Punjab State Women Games in athletics, basketball, hockey , kabaddi, kho-kho, handball, gymnastics, badminton, table tennis, swimming and volleyball at Bathinda from October 11 to 14. Punjab Weekend Hockey League for boys under-13, 14, 16 and 19 in Jalandhar, Amritsar and Ludhiana from July, 2008 to January. 2009.
