Chandigarh: To mark the 103rd birth anniversary of legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand, which is celebrated as National Sports Day, the Chandigarh Sports Council honoured three outstanding hockey players, Baljit Singh (senior), Rajpal Singh and Jaswinder Singh, at Sector 16 Cricket Stadium on Friday.
Pardip Mehra, adviser to UT administrator, was the chief guest at the function and awarded a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh each to the players. Home-cum-sports secretary Sanjay Kumar was also present on the occasion.
Mehra said Chandigarh has been the nursery of sportspersons for the last 30 to 35 years because of excellent sporting infrastructure. He also congratulated the three Olympic medal winners.
Mehra said the administration was committed to the expansion, maintenance and upgradation of city’s sports infrastructure.
IS Sandhu, director, sports, said five players from the Chandigarh Hockey Academy and an equal number from the football academy will hopefully make it to the respective national teams.
