MCM clinch hockey title

Chandigarh: MCM DAV College, Chandigarh, beat GGS College for Women, Ludhiana, 2-1 in the final played at PU on Monday, to win the Panjab University Inter-College Hockey Championship (Women).

The match was keenly contested as neither side allowed the other to dominate the proceeding. Sonika was the star performer for the winners as she scored both the goals. MCM opened their account in the 22nd minute when Sonika latched onto to a pass and put the ball into the goal to give her team a 1-0 lead. GGS then went all out to get an equaliser and their many raids into the rival half paid off when Babita scored a field goal in the 34th minute to restore parity.

After the breather, MCM looked more determined and playing with renewed purpose they slowly wore down the GGS defence and managed to win a penalty corner, which was duly converted by Sonika in the 51st minute to give her team a winning 2-1 lead. Though the GGS girls tried their level best they could not get past the MCM defenders who ably held the rival forwards at bay for the remaining 19 minutes of the match.
