Police call off hockey meet

Chandigarh: Terrorists docked at the Gateway of India with the hideous scheme of stopping India in its tracks. As much as one hates to admit, they have, even if temporarily, succeeded in doing so. While England Cricket Board has sent its security advisor to study if the scene is safe enough now for their boys to land here for the test series, UT police on Tuesday called off the all-India inter-police hockey tournament marked for winter.

‘‘There is no time for celebrations,’’ said DIG Mahavir Singh, while confirming the cancellation. Tasked with making arrangements for the tourney, Singh conveyed the unwillingness expressed by police forces of four states including Maharashtra, Mizoram, and Madhya Pradesh that wanted to give the championship a miss after the Mumbai mayhem.
