Una emerges as stopover tourist destination

Una: This district that borders Punjab has emerged as a popular stopover for tourists and pilgrims visiting various tourists spots like Dharamsala, Kullu and Manali. Located close to Hoshiarpur and Nangal, it has been influenced by Punjabi traditions with most residents speaking Punjabi.

Among the places popular with visitors are Dera Baba Rudru, about 10 km
from Una town, and the Chintpurni temple that is thronged by hundreds of thousands of Hindu devotees from other parts of the country, especially during the ‘navratra’ season.

Una is home to two hockey Olympians — Charanjit Singh and Deepak Thakur; the former was the captain of the Indian team that won the hockey gold medal in the 1964 Olympics.

The district has not made much progress in industrialization though a few small plants have come up in Mehatpur, Tahliwal, Amb and Gagret area. However, following the state government’s recent package exempting industrial units from certain taxes, the pace of development has picked up.
