Jeyasekaran passes away

Chennai: V. Jeyasekaran, former India and State hockey player, passed away following a heart attack.

He was 56. A brother of Olympian V. Baskaran, he was co-ordinating the conduct of the first division hockey league matches at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Friday.

He complained of uneasiness after finishing the schedule for the day and suddenly collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Jeyasekaran had been on the hockey scene for over three decades as a player and coach. A hard-working full-back, he represented the Tamil Nadu and Indian Railways in the National championships and several other tournaments.

He donned the India colours against France in a Test match in 1975. He was coach of the Sri Lanka team in the last SAF Games in Colombo, and Tamil Nadu teams for over five years.

Jeyasekaran, who was working as Commercial Operating Superintendent in Southern Railway, is survived by wife and two daughters. — Special Correspondent
