Birmingham: In sunny weather and before a large number of supporters, India frittered away a 2-0 lead to go down 3-2 to England and lose the three-match hockey series 2-1 here on Sunday.
India got off to an authoritative start with a third-minute goal from Vikram Pillay off a penalty stroke. Encouraged by this, India attacked strongly and enlarged the lead to 2-0 when S.V. Sunil scored a field goal.
But England gained the edge, and before half-time Ashley Jackson converted a penalty corner.
On resumption, England levelled the score when Jackson struck again off a penalty corner.
Everything then pointed towards a draw but, with six minutes remaining, Ian Mackay sounded the boards off a penalty corner to give England, now geared up for the European Championship at Amsterdam from August 22, a morale boosting series win.
