‘I won’t miss the Delhi experience for anything’

Shubhodeep Chakravarty, Hindustan Times

Games practice venues not ready security and health concerns, what is your take?

I’ve been to India a number of times and I know how the conditions are and how Indians go about these situations. I’m comfortable with my past experiences and I’m ok with everything. It’s different to the way we do things here but it’s ok.

International contingents have delayed their arrival, what is the mood in the Aussie camp?

There has been a lot in the media about security and accommodation but we have been concentrating on hockey. We knew the media would talk about these subjects but we are ok with it.

Are you looking forward to the trip to India?

It does excite me because Indians love their hockey. I really enjoy playing games in India against them, it’s a great atmosphere and I won’t miss it for anything.

Has the team been working on a strategy which is specific to the CWG?

No, we are concentrating on our game and what we need to do to be better.

The team was here for the World Cup in February. Do you think that’ll help the squad adjust faster?

We know the pitch and how it plays and we are familiar with the Indian lifestyle. Taking in the sights and sounds will be quicker too.

Is there a sense of overconfidence given that Australia are the No. 1 team?

We are confident but not overconfident. We like being the No. 1 team in the world and we want to stay there.

What are the areas you are working on personally and what does the team need to focus on?

I need to more flexible because I will be playing different positions over the next couple of years. I’m continually trying to improve things like interception, deflection, back-stick passes, etc. As for the team, there are a lot of things we need to improve on. Penalty corners, attack and defence top the list.

Finally, which are the teams to look out for?

India and Pakistan are in our pool and will be very tough games. In the other pool, England will be tough.
