Self-belief will work wonders

Pargat Singh, Hindustan Times

The well deserved 3-2 verdict against Malaysia in their opening group match should infuse more spirit into the Indian players to give an improved performance. The eight-time Olympic champions have a tough task ahead as they cross swords with Australia, three-time champions at the Commonwealth Games. As far as India’s performance against Australia in the Games goes, they have met only once (1998) and Oz won comfortably by a 5-2 margin.

Earlier this year at the Dhyan Chand Stadium, Australia had beaten India 5-2 in a World Cup pool match. Now, India have a score to settle with the Kookaburras. Australia are determined to take their fourth title in succession.

They won the World Cup earlier this year by beating Germany 2-1 in the final. I am confident our boys are capable of doing wonders provided they believe in themselves and perform to their potential. The Rajpal Singh-led team must keep up the momentum they have acquired by beating Malaysia. The defenders should not leave any gaps for the Kookaburras to exploit.

The forward-line consisting of Rajpal, Tushar Khandkar, Shivendra Singh and Dharamvir Singh must combine and go for field goals and also create opportunities for penalty corners. Hawkeye Communications/Chivach Sports
