IE Sports Ministry announces cash award for Junior women hockey team

The Sports Minister Jitendra Singh on Wednesday announced a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 to each member of the junior women’s hockey team, who recently created history by winning the country’s first-ever bronze medal in the Junior Women Hockey World Cup in Monchengladbach, Germany.

The Ministry also announced reward of Rs. 25,000 for each coach in the team.

Congratulating the 18-member squad led by captain Sushila Chanu on its success, Jitendra Singh said, “You have made the country proud by winning the bronze medal in the event.

“The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports stands committed to supporting your endeavour to bring laurels to India in future.”

The members of the team, who met Jitendra Singh at his office today, shared their experience during the tournament and apprised him about the training and facilities given to them in the run up to the World Cup.

The Minister and Secretary Sports, P K Deb along with the entire hockey squad celebrated the occasion by cutting a cake.

On behalf of the hockey team, Sushila presented the Minister a T-shirt and a hockey stick signed by all members of the bronze-medal winning squad.

Indian eves pipped England 3-2 on penalties in the third-fourth place play-off match to bag the bronze.
