Mixed day for State as NE Games begins

IMPHAL, Feb 4: Manipur collected three bronze medals suffered defeat in women’s table tennis while the men’s teams triumphed in football and hockey competitions on the opening day of the 23rd North East Games at Agartala (Tripura) today. The opening ceremony of the region’s biggest gathering of sportspersons was held with Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar.

In men’s swimming L Bankim secured the bronze in 200 metre freestyle before teaming up with Tokesh, Mahesh and Pratap to bag the bronze in the 4×100 metre event.

The third bronze came in the 4×100 event through the State quartet of Sandhyarani, Ch Rani, L Ashalata and M Ambrabati.

Manipur defeated Meghalaya 3-0 in men’s table tennis while the women suffered defeat to Sikkim by the same set margin. State eves also conceded defeat to Tripura in badminton as the male shuttlers overcame Sikkim.

Manipur also won its opening men’s hockey match with a 3-1 defeat of Assam while Sikkim suffered 0-5 thrashing in football competition.
