Dhanraj Pillay thanks Prime Minister Narendra Modi for support to hockey legend Mohammad Shahid’s treatment

Mohammad Shahid was admitted to Medanta Medicity Hospital in Gurgaon after a bout of jaundice and dengue made his condition worse.

Former India Hockey captain Dhanraj Pillay thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sports Ministry and the Indian Railways for their support and assistance to former National captain Mohammad Shahid.

Pillay on Friday had appealed to Prime Minister Modi to provide assistance for the treatment of Shahid, who is fighting for survival due to liver and kidney problems.

The 56-year-old former forward was admitted to Medanta Medicity Hospital in Gurgaon after a bout of jaundice and dengue made his condition worse. He was airlifted on Tuesday evening from Varanasi.

The sports minister announced Rs 10 lakh for the overhead expenses, while the Indian Railways, with whom Shahid is employed, has taken care of expenses incurred on the treatment directly. UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has also sanctioned Rs 5 Lakh for Mohd. Shahid’s treatment.

“I thank the honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, Sports Minister Shri Jitendra Singh ji, indian railways and railways minister Shri Suresh Prabhu ji and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Akhilesh Yadav ji for their prompt support and assistance to Shahid bhai’s treatment,” Pillay said.

A master of stick control, Shahid was considered one of the most exquisite proponents of the game for his ability to dodge and weave past any opponent. He was a part of 1980 Olympic gold-medal winning team and also won silver and bronze in the 1982 and 1986 Asian Games, respectively.
