BOSTON: India let in an early goal and then failed to convert the scoring chances to lose 0-1 to England in its first medal round Group E match of the women’s Junior World Cup here on Saturday.

India, which has carried forward three points to the second phase after topping the group, now needs to win both its matches against Chile and Korea in order to make it to the semifinals.

India began strongly earning two penalty corners, but both were well anticipated by England goalkeeper Gemma Ible.

England mounted an attack and scored in the seventh minute when skipper Samantha Quek sent a long ball to Georgie Twigg. The latter set up the unmarked Loren Sherer who fired home past Indian custodian Jasdeep Kaur. The Indians had many opportunities to restore parity, but forwards Ritu Rani, Vandana Kataria and Joydeep Kaur could not capitalise on them. — PTI
