The hosts Jamia Milia Islamia wins the North Zone Inter-University Hockey defeating fighting Punjab university 1-0.
The final of league match of the North Zone Inter-Varsity Hockey (Men) Tournament 2010-11 was held today (January 4, 2011 at 02.00 PM) at the Hockey Ground of Faculty of Education, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI). Jamia’s a solitary field goal was scored by Devi Prasan.
The event was held despite chilling weather conditons, credit for this must go to the brave players.
In the other match played between Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar and Kurukshtra University, Kurukshtra, was a 3-3 draw.
Zafar Iqbal, Olympian and Arjuna Awardee, gave away the prizes in the presence of Prof. S.M. Rashid, Pro Vice-Chancellor, JM.
The final standing of the teams are as follows:
Jamia Millia Islamia stands on First Position, Kurukshetra University on Second Position, GND University on Third Position and Punjab University, Chandigarh on Fourth position.
This year edition, a total of 27 Universities from North Zone had participated in the Tournament. All the Universities were divided into four pools viz. A, B, C & D. A total 29 matches were played out. Out of these, 23 were played at the knock-out stage and 6 were played at the league level.
