Delhi beat Rajasthan 3-1 via penalty shootout

SONEPAT, Oct 4: Delhi entered the quarterfinals of 2nd Hockey India Junior Women National Championship with a 3-1 victory over Rajasthan via a penalty shootout in a nerve-wracking Pool H league game in the Motilal Nehru School of Sports, Rai today.

Delhi goalkeeper Swaleha became the star with two saves to lead Delhi as the fifth team in the quarterfinals after the match ended in a 2-2 draw after the regulation time and 15-minute extra time. Delhi scored its opeing goal in the 16th minute through Lalita. Rajasthan leveled in the 59th minute with the penalty corner conversion by skipper Sonam. Delhi took the lead again in the 65th minute via a penalty stroke by Lalita but three minutes later Sonam scored equaliser for Rajasthan.

Sabnam Lakra scored four goals as last year’s runner-up Jharkhand raced to 9-0 win against Manipur in its opening Pool B game. Jharkhand dominated the proceedings from the start and scored first through Sushila Lakra in the fourth minute. Anima Minz, Sabnam, Lakra, Punam M. Tete,Nomita Xalxo and Ranjita Soreng.

In Pool D, Odisha beat Puducheryy 29-0. Surabhi Pradhan (5), Punam Barla (4), Reshma Lakra (4), Lilima Minz (4), Biranji Ekka (3), Anita Ekka (2), Rajkumari Ekka (2) and Lata Kujur (2) scored in Odisha’s first win in the group. In another Pool D match, Karnataka beat Gujarat 18-0.

Uttar Pradesh made a good start in Pool F as it defeated Jammu & Kashmir 19-0. Taking time to settle down, Uttar Pradesh scored first in the 11th minute through Archana Singh and thereafter scored through Pratibha Chaudhary, Kavita Maurya , Kiran Kumari, Komal Sahani, Srishti Singh, Pranjal Sharma and Vaishali Lal.

Odisha 29 (Birajini Ekka 1, 11, 13; Punam Barla 2, 32, 41, 51,69; Lilima Minz 3, 10, 50, 60; Elin Lakra 5, 63; Reshma Lakra 21, 23, 34, 43; Anita Ekka 22, 24; Rajkumari Ekka 25, 45; Surabhi Pradhan 37, 39, 46, 47, 64; Lata Kujur 38, 42 ) beat Puducherry 0.
