BOSTON: India beat Chile 3-1 in their second round match of the Women’s Junior Hockey World Cup here at Harvard University’s Jordan Field.
For India, Poonam Rani (28th, 62nd) struck a brace while Roselin Dung Dung (68th min) added to the tally. Andrea Greene (15th) scored the solitary goal for Chile Sunday night.
India now have six points with this win but are behind England, Australia and Korea in the six team Pool E. They had gone down to England by a solitary goal in their pool opener earlier.
Chile began on a quick note but the persistent Indians came back strongly in the second half.
Indian goalkeeper Jasdeep Kaur did well to thwart a number of penalty corners, but in the 15th minute failed to stop a brilliant drag-flick by Greene, who was set up neatly by skipper Sofia Walbaum.
With just seven minutes left for the breather, a diving Poonam deflected Joydeep Kaur’s pass past Chile’s goalkeeper Beatriz Wirth to score the equaliser for India.
Chile had a few chances in the second half but a resolute Indian defence kept them at bay.
India stole the lead in the 62nd minute when Poonam combined with Ritu Rani and dodged past defenders Paula Liu and Manuela Urroz before shooting past the onrushing Wirth.
India’s extended the lead six minutes later when Roselin sounded the board from captain Ranjita Devi Thokchom’s long pass.
India will play their last game of the second round against defending champions South Korea on Tuesday
