In the year, when the Indian mens hockey team failed to make it for the Olympics for the first time in the history, the Poona School Athletic Association (PSAA) too had scraped this national game from their calendar this year. This was a blow for not only the hockey players, but also for the sports fraternity of the city.
The Daily News & Analysis (DNA) took up the issue and has come out to reintroduce the national game in the event to be organised by the St Vincents High School. The PSAA inter-school boys and girls hockey tournament will be sponsored by DNA at the St Vincents School ground from December 17.
“As we did not get sponsors last season, we were forced to not include hockey in the events this academic year 2008-09, and we are thankful to DNA, for taking up the issue seriously and conduct the event,” said Ashok Gunjal, Spokesperson of PSAA.
The DNA Trophies will be awarded to the winners of all the categories besides the runners-up. In all, there are four sections in the boys, and the girls under-14 and under-16 categories have been included for the first time.
This five–day championship will conclude on December 21. For details and entries, contact Devane at St Vincents High School or call 9226761378.
