Ranchi Rhino’s star player and upcoming hockey hero, Mandeep Singh has already booked his berth in the senior team for the upcoming World Hockey League Round 3. From his debut in the junior Asia Cup last year, to his debut in the senior team this year, ‘Baby-India’ is looking forward for an impressive tour to Netherlands.

Right after returning from Azlan Shah Cup, till last month, you were training as a part of Junior India camp. In fact, you skipped the last few days of the junior camp due to your examination. Was it a surprise call to the senior squad?

Certainly, it was a surprise. When I applied for taking leave for my exams, Saini sir (Baljit Singh Saini) asked me to return soon as I had to join the seniors. But, he did not mention about selection in the squad for WHL Round 3. It came as a complete surprise.

You made your senior debut in WHL Round 2. WHL Round 3 is your second major senior tournament considering that Indian side had sent a development team in Azlan Shah. So, how special is WHL for you?

Of course, it is very special. I remember that in WHL Round 2, I was pretty nervous on how to go about the game. I used to keep thinking how to take a shot, how to make the right movements, etc. But today, with guidance of my coach and seniors, I have developed confidence.

Your performance in Round 2 was not very impressive. You just managed to score just a single goal and your HIL form was missing. What is your target for Round 3?

Undoubtedly, I want to improve my game. I look forward to score a lot of goals. Plus, I have been discussing about my game with Sardar Singh and Raghunath. I hope Round 3 will be a success.

Talking about the teams, some of the big hockey playing nations are participating this time. How much pressure does it add?

No wonder, it is going to be a tough competition. But, we have been practicing well. We had a great camp. Let’s hope that we deliver accordingly.

Finally, a player from any other country you are keenly looking at this WHL?

My Ranchi Rhinos buddy and Netherlands’s Floris Evers. It will be nice to meet him after long.
