Playing either in the midfield or as a forward, Naomi van Ass (born July 26, 1983) had been a familiar face in a hugely successful Dutch squad over the years.

She retired after the 2016 Rio Olympics where the Netherlands against all expectations lost to Great Britain in a final that went to a shootout.

The disappointment notwithstanding, Van Ass has a glittering trophy showcase including two Olympic gold medals (Beijing 2008 and London 2012) and as many at the World Cup (Madrid 2006 and London 2018).

Van Ass played 168 international matches and scored 35 goals for the Netherlands and was voted 2016 FIH Player of the Year.

She turns out for MHC Laren in the Dutch league.
