Nehru hockey poised for another leap
With the golden jubilee of its flagship event – Senior Nehru Cup – unfolding this season, Delhi based Nehru Hockey Tournament Society, is poised to make quite a few steps to make its events popular, state of art with an eye on elusive eyeballs.
Nehru Senior Cup, founded in 1964 in celebration of India regaining the Olympic gold at Tokyo, is on an important milestone, as this year marks its golden jubilee.
Domestic tournaments are vital in keeping Indian hockey alive and kicking, offering platform for institutional teams to retain their identity, but somehow the traditional stronghold has come under stress quite often due to multiple factors, among them the new catch Leagues is one such.
However, Kukoo Walia, Secretary of the Society says his management team is upto the task and will leave no stone unturned to keep the Nehru flag high by adopting to new vistas.
“We have as a first step vastly improved our website, and have our own social media page. For the first time, we are going to web-cast all the matches in our website, which includes Sub Junior (boys and Girls), Junior and Senior events. This is to reach out to not only Indian audiences but also to those diehard foreign fans ”.
“This is in addition to enhanced prize money to the tune of thirty to fifty percent. For instant, the Nehru Senior Cup winner will get Rs.4 lac this year against 2.5 last year, and such increment in every event we hold ”, he adds.
