New Indian Express: MCC-Mururgappa hockey event from July 27

CHENNAI: Ten teams will vie for top honours in the 91st edition of the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament to be played at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium from July 27 to August 6.

“The Madras Cricket Club aims at promoting hockey on a large scale and that is the idea behind the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup. We are honoured to be associated with the 91st edition,” said Srivatsan Subramaniyam, president of MCC.

Indian Railways, the defending champion will be participating in the tournament as the 10 teams have been divided into two pools of five each. The tournament will be played on a league-cum-knock-out basis. The top two from each pool will qualify for the semifinals to be played on August 5. The final will be played on August 6 under floodlights.

The top two teams will win cash prizes of `5 and `2.5 lakhs, respectively. There will also be a cash prize of `10,000 given along with a high-end bicycle each to the best forward, best midfielder, best goalkeeper/defender, the most promising player of the tournament and the man of the match of the final.

Pool A: Indian Railways; Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd ( BPCL); Punjab & Sind Bank; Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu (HUT); Hockey Bengaluru. Pool B: Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC); Punjab National Bank (PSB); Army XI; Hockey Odisha; Central Secretariat Hockey Team.
