Pune: National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, goalkeeper Bhagirath Somaiyaji saved three attempts during the tie-breaker that saw his team enter the quarterfinals in the senior division of the Aga Khan Cup hockey tournament at PCMC stadium on Wednesday.
NDA beat Green Meadows 2-1 via tiebreaker. The full-time score was 0-0. In the resultant tie-breaker, NDA converted through Devendra Sharma, Abhishek Singh while Green Meadows were successful through Atul Kalate. Bhagirath blocked the penalties of Sachin Bhondve, Rishikesh Kulkarni and Sagar Gaikwad. Kamlesh Oswal shot wide.
Earlier, in a one-sided encounter, Central Railway dished out Ichalkaranji 6-0 and made the last-eight. Shiva Waghcoure (2), Vineet Nimal, Prakash Gumhre, Ashish Bhosale and Navneet Savarkar were the goal-getters. The inter-school boys’ section saw centre-forward Danish Sayyed’s scoring a lone goal for Alphonso school (Pimpri) against St. Patrick’s in their quarterfinals. In the girls’ section, inside-right Jamuna Kachwala enabled St. Helena’s defeat Jyoti School (Pimpri) 1-0 and Sheetal Natu’s solitary goal fetched SKF Academy (Chinchwad) a win over St. Joseph’s girls (Khadki).
