The fifth edition of the Majaraja Ranjit Singh Hockey Cup will be held from 16th onwards at Gurgaon, a suburb of Delhi.
The organizers announced the teams and other details in a thinly attended press conference today here in Delhi
Teams in the fray include Bharat Petroleum, Indian Oil, PSB, Indian Colts, Air India, Army XI, Namdhari and Assam XI.
According to MS Bhuller, Organizing Committee Chairman, they could not garner as much sponsorship support as much they expected due to ‘recession and lack of interest in hockey’
“In this circumstances, it is difficult to conduct the tournament. We had only two choices, either to cancel it — which is easier — or conduct it. We took the difficult choice”, he said.
The tournament will be staged on knock out cum league format.
The finals will be played on 23rd.
Organizing Secretary Brig HJS Chimini wished to have minimum of 16 teams, but he regretted that India did not have that many teams right now.
