PATIALA : The SAI Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports, Patiala has a special reason to celebrate the victory of the Indian Hockey team at Ipoh, Malaysia.
The star player and the captain of the Indian Hockey team that won the trophy of the Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Cup, was the groomed, for about five years, from year 2002 to 2007, as a full time regular resident trainee of the SAI Center of Excellence, at the Institute.
At this center, the trainees are offered free board and lodging; free sports kit, sports equipment, and competition exposure; medical and insurance facilities and in-house scientific sports training.
During his training at the Institute, Sandeep had displayed his excellence at a number of competitions like 2004 Athens Olympics; Junior Asia Cup in Pakistan; Junior World Cup in Australia in 2004; Commonwealth Games 2005 & 2007; and the Champions Trophy.
The Executive Director of the Institute, Shri L.S.Ranawat hopes that this victory would prove a great morale booster for the Hockey team; and we should cash this newly found confidence, to regain the past glory of the Indian Hockey.
At present a large percentage of the players of the Indian team are the products of the SAI. This very well proves the efficacy of the sports promotion schemes of the Sports Authority of India.

I don’t know how SAI takes credit for Sandeep who is a self made person
Sandeep was a attached to SAI scheme in Patiala. But no special training was given to him by then the so called CEX coach IS Gill, who was then attached to national women camp along with Mr. Bhangu. Sandip had his training from 2003 junior national camp for a week prior to MCC in chennai, followed by a month long camp for the Poland 6 nations junior men hockey tournament where he learned and mastered his PC drag flick under effective guidance from coach Harendra and Clarence Lobo. If you see, prior to the camp in the MCC tournament, Sandeep was the only a reserve for the Indian colts. So Sandeep is not a self made person… may be he must have done some flicks, but his proficiency was achieved under the guidance of above 2 coaches.
It is strange to read that sandeep has learned drag-flick from Harendra and Clarence Lobo.Me and Sandeep were trained by Mr. I.S.Gill from 2002 to 2005 together at SAINSNIS Patiala .Mr. Gill groomed him as a drag-flicker,before that he did not even knew how to spell DRAG-FLICK.
nad one more thing Mr stoneman hockey……Why dont you check out the records of Olympics games where he himself has mentioned that he is a product of SAI. The copy of that very document is with the olympics association as wel as SAI PAtiala.
