Semi-final 1: Its M.S. Dhoni vs Suresh Raina

The weekend for hockey lovers could not be more happening as the top four teams in the Hero Hockey India League are set to lock horns today to seal a berth in the final. After the end of the league matches, it’s time for the semi-final.

While the stage is set for the semis, we give you a little recap on the performance of the two teams in the league so far.

Ranchi Rays – The Harendra-Singh coached Ranchi Rays have scripted the perfect story of making a comeback. After going down 3-6 against Kalinga Lancers in the very first match of the HIL, Ranchi Rays have picked up their sticks and learnt their lessons well. Out of the ten matches they played, they won have six, drew 2 and lost two matches.

Players to watch for – The skipper Ashley Jackson. The player from England has set the right example for his team, leading from the front, scoring goals and ensuring the team plays according to the set strategy. Scoring 11 goals in the tournament so far, all through Penalty Corners, Jackson is leading the points table as the top scorer in the tournament.

UP Wizards – At number three in the points table, UP Wizards have once again sealed a berth for the semi-final as they have been doing in the last two editions as well. Though, they failed to make it to the finals in the previous two semi-finals, they would surely be looking to end that run and ensure that their dream to play the finals is finally fulfilled this year. And it does not look unrealistic as their strategy planner, coach Roelant Oltmans would leave no stones unturned to do the not done. UP Wizards have so far won five matches, drew two and lost three.

Players to watch for – The skipper again- VR Raghunath. Raghunath’s drag flick skills needs no introduction. He is at the third position in the top-scorer list with seven goals. Also to look out for, will be goalkeeper P.R. Sreejesh, whose stands tall guarding the team’s cage. Sreejesh is in incredible form and has made some good saves in this edition. The Raghunath-Sreejesh duo is sure to give the forwards of Ranchi Rays a tough time.
