KU INTER-DEPARTMENT HOCKEY TOURNAMENT
Srinagar, July 10: The department of Masters in Computer Application (MCA) has emerged as the winner of the Kashmir University inter-department hockey tournament by defeating Library and Information Science department by four goals to one at the University ground on Thursday.
The Library Science department had a good start when Owais Rasool gave them lead in the fifth minute of the match by netting the ball. The team however failed to retain the edge as Shahid Inayat equalized for MCA department in the 15th minute. The MCA players after scoring an equaliser played aggressive hockey and continued to net the ball frequently. Waseem scored for the team in 20th minute while as Tawheed netted the ball in 25th minute. At half time, the score was 3-1 in favor of MCA department.
The spectators were expecting that the department of library science might put up a fight in second half, but the MCA players displayed quality hockey skills attacked the opponent’s goal many times. Shahid Inayat from MCA scored the fourth goal as a result of which the department won the match and lifted the championship title. Principal Government Women’s College MA Road Professor Zeenat Ara who was the chief guest on the occasion distributed prizes among the winners. Among the other guests present on the occasion was senior and former Kashmir University hockey coach Paramjit Singh.
During the tournament, selectors have selected 30 probable players which will be short listed to 20 players.
Giving details about the tournament, hockey coach Harminder Singh under whose supervision the tournament was organized said, “We have selected 30 probable during the tournament that will be curtailed to 20. The short listed players will participate in the inter-college tournament. The short listing of players would be done during the trials which will be held next week and shortly after that we will organize coaching camp for those players.”
When asked about the talent in post-graduate departments he said, “We have lot of talent and they only need expert guidance. I can confidently say that we have found a talented goalkeeper from MCA department Suhail Qadir during the tournament. During the final’s, he saved 12 chances for his team. If nurtured well he can make a name for himself.”
The tournament was organized by Directorate of Physical Education and Sports department Kashmir University and nine post-graduate departments teams of university participated.
