Brasa has done a tremendous job for India

S. THYAGARAJAN

“Retain your coach.” This suggestion came from Leandro Negre, President, International Hockey Federation, on Sunday.

Immersed in the euphoria that enveloped the Dhyanchand Stadium after India had produced a stunning show against Pakistan, the FIH boss was immensely pleased with the turnout, the atmosphere and the performance of the home team.

While indicating that India and Pakistan should be among the top contenders for all championships, Negre is convinced that India’s Spanish coach, Jose Brasa, has done a tremendous job in helping Indian hockey.

Negre’s suggestion probably stems from the speculation that Brasa’s days with Indian hockey are numbered.

The time has come now to take a close and unbiased look at the work of Brasa.

The Spaniard has been very pragmatic and forthright in his observations about the archaic system he is compelled to function under with too many restraints imposed on him, including the restrictions in media interactions.

There have been reports, probably inspired, over his differences with Harendra Singh, and on his role when the players walked out of the camp before the World Cup.

Brasa has his reasons to be miffed. His demands on having more of a say in team composition is justified. .

And. it would be uncharitable to deny Brasa the credit of injecting a new vibrancy into the national team.

His work needs objective evaluation before decision over his future are taken.
