FIH to keep close watch
Chennai: The status reports of the world level events for this year and 2010, which include the World Cup in New Delhi, were discussed in detail at the Executive Board meeting of the International Hockey Federation at Lausanne last week.
The meeting decided to closely monitor the progress of all the events carefully.
Another important decision taken was related to the launch of the new World Club competition, which FIH hopes to organise next year in Barcelona.
The FIH is keen to secure a slot in the council of the International Olympic Committee, and efforts are to be made to get back the seat left vacant by Els van Breda Vriessmann after her resignation following the defeat in the FIH Congress at Los Angeles.
Leandro Negre, the incumbent President, who defeated Els, is understandably being projected to become part of the IOC Council.
The EB also appointed the 66-year-old Spaniard Fernando Riba as the FIH Treasurer in place of the Swiss Jean-Pierre Strebel, who resigned recently. — Hockey Correspondent
