CHANDIGARH: Two goals including a golden goal by Gangdeep Singh helped Government Model High School, Sector 42-B, Chandigarh, beat Government Model Senior Secondary School, Ladowali, Jalandhar, 3-2 in the semifinals of the ATS 38th Nehru junior hockey tournament, under the floodlights at the Sector-42 Stadium here on Friday.

The Jalandhar team had led 2-0 following goals by skipper Satbir Singh and Akashdeep Singh in the 18th and 26th minutes respectively. Captain Singh pulled one back for the Chandigarh team in the 34th minute.

Gagandeep Singh struck the telling blows in the 49th minute, and in the 78th minute when the match had slipped into the extra-time golden goal period.

In the other semifinals, two goals by Jatinder Singh powered Dhudial Khasla Higher Secondary School, Patiala, to a 3-2 victory over Springdales Senior Secondary School, Fatehgarh Churian Road, Amritsar. It was the Amritsar team that lead 2-1 following two goals by skipper Ramandeep Singh, including one off a penalty stroke. While Prashant Kalshi had scored a goal for the Patiala team in the first half, it was Jatinder Singh who tilted the balance in his team’s favour with goals in the 49th and 60th minutes.

Inter-school tourney

The first Indian Oil inter-school hockey tournament will be held at the Government High School, Sector 7, Faridabad, from Saturday.

The tournament will feature eight best teams from Faridabad with the focus on spotting talented players for proper coaching. The camp for the beginners began on Friday with veteran player Sukhdev Singh holding the inaugural session.
