HAL and MLI register wins

Madikeri: Hindustan Aeronautics, Bangalore and Maratha Light Infantry, Belgaum, posted identical 4-2 victories in the Super Division hockey league here on Tuesday.

In the first match of the day, HAL outplayed Centre of Excellence (CoE), Bangalore. Mohammad Nayeem, who is on a scoring spree in this championship, accounted for two field goals, in the 17th and 41st minutes, while Aiyappa (42nd) scored another field goal and Regan Bopanna (48th) converted a penalty corner.

Though Sampath Kumar fetched the lead for CoE in the seventh minute, it was short-lived. Darshan scored one more for CoE in the 61st minute.

Krishna, Sunil score

In the second match, MLI beat Central Excise, Bangalore, through penalty corner conversions by Krishna Patil (6th) and Sunil Kumar (31st), while Prasanna Kumar (47th) and Ganesh Patil (61st) added to the tally.

Vivek Ramakrishna drew first blood for Excise netting one in the fourth minute and another in the 44th minute.

In Wednesday’s matches, MEG will play ASC while Army Green takes on Sports Authority of India.

Dhruv in last eight

Seeded players had an easy passage to the quarterfinals of the AITA Talent Series junior tennis tournament at the Jain Residential International School courts here on Tuesday.

In the under-14 section, the third-seed, Dhruv Sunish, of Maharashtra outplayed Saurab Hegde 6-0, 6-2 to make the last eight round.

Sunish, who is the top seed in the under-12 section, also duly made it the quarterfinals beating Sartak Devraj of Chandigarh 8-2 in a best of 15 game contest.

The top seed, S. Kishan and the second seed S. Karthik both of Karnataka also entered the quarterfinals of the boys under-14 singles.

Girls: Under-14: Nupur Umashankar bt P. Sivanuja (AP) 8-5; Srivani Rao (AP) bt Shreya Mahadevan 8-6; Karishma Bhavani (Mah) bt Baria Yadav Sakshi (AP) 8-4.

Under-12: Prerna Kalwar bt Nandini Gupta 8-2; Tanmayee Patnaik (Ori) bt Neena Bensh (Ker) 8-1; Shivani Rao bt Gayatri Shankar (Ker) 8-1 .

Archery trials

Selection trials for the Karnataka archery team will be held at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on April 11.

The State team is scheduled to compete in the National archery championship at Guwahati from April 23 to 27.
