Arjun Halappa talks hockey

Life is good for Arjun Halappa, one of the finest hockey players India has ever produced.

The 34-year-old former India captain is now a national selector and pleased with what hockey has given him. In this brief chat with MetroPlus, he reflects on his career and speaks of his favourite players and coaches.

Your career: I am very happy with what I have got in my life. I never imagined that I would reach the heights I did.

Inspiration: My father, B.K. Halappa, used to play for East Bengal Hockey Club. He was the one who inspired me to take up hockey.

Favourite player: Dhanraj Pillay is the best hockey player I have had the pleasure of playing with. He was not only greatly skilled but also a brilliant leader. He was a mentor to all of us and an inspiration to me throughout my career.

Favourite coach: Jose Brasa (who coached India from May 2009 to November 2010). He understood the players well and got the best out of them.

Indian hockey: It is much better than it used to be. There are good sponsors and the players are paid more than they used to be. Whatever its popularity may be, there are still people who are emotionally attached to hockey and prefer it to any other sport.

Advice to kids: Go out more and play outdoors, instead of playing video games or watching television. Play a sport; it will teach you a lot.
