BANGALORE: The Bangalore University will host the South Zone inter-University hockey tournament for men at three venues — St. John’s Medical College grounds, the Sullivan Police ground and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) complex from October 20 to 25.

The tournament has attracted 35 teams — 13 from Tamil Nadu, seven from Andhra Pradesh, four from Kerala and one from Pondicherry besides 10 from Karnataka.

The event will be played on knock-out cum league format.

The 31 teams, excluding the four semifinalists of last year’s tournament held at Annamalai University, Chidambaram, Annamalai, Madras, Bangalore and Bharathiyar — will figure in the knock-out phase and will be joined in the quarterfinals by the four seeded teams.

Four teams then will figure in the semi final league which will determine the South Zone champions. All the four will then travel to Sambalpur (Orissa) for the All India Inter Zonal tournament to be held in the second week of November.

Speaking at a press briefing here this afternoon, Dr R. Muni Reddy, Director of Physical Education, Bangalore University, who is also the Organising secretary said that “considering the vagaries of nature the quarterfinal and the semifinal league will be played at the SAI Campus”.

Bangalore University, thrice All India champions and winners of the South Zone tournament for 17 consecutive years, has also named its team. Twelve of the 18-member team is from Al Ameen College.
