PSB posts win

KOLKATA: Former champion Punjab and Sind Bank (PSB) got the better of Tamil Nadu XI by the odd goal in three while last year’s semifinalist Indian Oil was held to a 1-1 draw by local league champion Punjab Sports Club in the first set of quarterfinal league matches of the all-India Beighton Cup hockey tournament at the SAI ground here on Saturday.

In an all-Kolkata contest, CESC overcame Eastern Railways Sports Association by a solitary goal. Rajbinder Singh struck once in either half for PSB against a fighting TN side whose goal was the work of Gautam L. Singh’s brace came in the 22nd and 50th minutes through field goals following some good combination play. Gautam’s reducer was through a penalty corner.

Hamza Muztada put Indian Oil ahead in the fifth minute through a fine effort. The success was shortlived as Prem Kumar equalized for Punjab SC in the 47th minute. Sunil Kujur’s 52nd minute goal was enough for CESC to post a win. — Special Correspondent
