Shahbad girls are champions

Coach Baldev Singh was a relieved man after his team managed to overhaul a two goal deficit to win the 20th Nehru junior girls hockey tournament 4-2 on Friday. He was fuming at half time as his team, Government Girls SSS (Shahbad), trailed 0-2 against defending champion Kiddy’s Corner HSS (Gwalior).
Despite dominating for the first 35 minutes, the Shahbad girls had been guilty of wayward shooting and lack of co-ordination upfront.
They messed up five penalty corners and at least three clear chances to score.
In the play-off for the third place, Birsa Munda Vidyapitha (Rourkela) beat Government Model SSS (Chandigarh) 5-3.
The results:
Final: Govt Girls SSS (Shahbad) 4 (Reet 2, Manpret Kaur, Ritu) beat Kiddy’s Corner HSS 2 (Karishma Yadav, Sadhna Sengar).
Third place play-off: Birsa Munda Vidyapitha 5 (Ashmita Barla 2, Elima Minz, Priyanka Kujur, Own Goal) beat Govt Model SSS 3 (Saroj 2, Anjali).
