WSH dangles carrot: Rs 10 lakh for India players

With Hockey India hardening its stance on the participation of national team players in the World Series Hockey (WSH), the organisers of the unsanctioned event are going all out to retain its star domestic recruits.

On Monday, they announced huge financial incentives to WSH players who make it to the Indian squad for the Olympic qualifiers, even though Hockey india has already made it clear that those who turn out in the league will not be considered for the national team. The announcement, coming as it does close on the heels of a reiteration of sanctions against participating players by the International Hockey Federation, is likely to further divide opinion on the league. As per the incentives announced, WSH-signed players who make it to the Indian team will get Rs 5 lakhs each, with an additional Rs 5 lakh if India qualifies for the London Olympics. A medal for India at the 2012 Games will ensure further riches for WSH-signed players in the team.

The Indian Hockey Federation (IHF), co-promoters of the league, said that contrary to claims that they were trying to sabotage India’s qualification chances, the IHF was trying its best to motivate players to give their best for the country. “Success at London Olympics will be a matter of immense national pride. IHF is committed towards creating multiple opportunities for players to excel. The incentive plan is to further motivate the players to perform at the global stage,” IHF president RK Shetty said.
