The Tribune: Hockey meet from today
The 1st Marshal Arjan Singh Memorial All-India Hockey Tournament will be held on May 7-12 at the hockey grounds of 3 BRD Air Force and Sector 42 Sports Complex.
A total of 12 teams from military, paramilitary, police and civil departments will participate in the championship, being organised under the aegis of Air Force Sports Control Board (AFSCB), New Delhi. Air Force, SC Railways, GGS Lucknow, Punjab Police, Hockey Chandigarh, Punjab & Sind Bank, Navy, BSF, Rail Coach Factory, Kapurthala, Eastern Railways, Kerala and Dakshin Bharat Area have confirmed their participation.
Group Captain Deepak Ahluwalia, secretary AFSCB, said that the tournament will be played on a league-cum-knockout basis and the winner will get a cash award of Rs 2 lakh. The runners-up will get Rs 1 lakh and the second runners-up will get Rs 25,000. Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa will be the chief guest at the closing ceremony of the tournament on May 12. The tournament is organised in the memory of late Marshal of Indian Air Force Arjan Singh, who was a hockey lover and recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross and Padma Vibhushan. He was the first and the only Five Star ranking officer of the IAF.
