KOLKATA: The Bengal Hockey Association is all set to have its own stadium after the state government on Friday signed an agreement with it to hand over four acres of land for constructing the facility with an artificial turf.

The agreeement was signed between officials of state’s sports department and the BHA in the presence of Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Sports Minister Kanti Ganguly.

The user agreement would remain valid for five years and be subject to further extension.

The 8000-seater stadium would come up within the Yuba Bharati Krirangan complex behind Hyatt Regency hotel in 18 months time for national or international matches, the BHA Secretary Gurbux Singh said. Hockey great Leslie Claudius was also present on the occasion.

The state’s Sports Minister Kanti Ganguly said, “We have to construct hockey stadiums even in the districts for the benefit of hockey.”
