JALANDHAR: Dragflicker Gurpreet Singh struck twice as Bharat Petroleum registered a narrow 3-2 victory over Indian Oil to clinch the 26th Indian Oil Surjit Hockey Tournament title on Friday.
In a see-saw battle, Gurpreet put BPCL ahead after converting a penalty corner that came its way in the very first minute.
After two minutes, Indian Oil earned a penalty corner and International Deedar singh made no mistake and drew parity.
Both the Mumbai teams wasted chances galore and stayed leveled at 1-1 at the half-way stage at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium here.
After the lemon break, in the 46th minute another chance came BPCL’s way but Gurpreet Singh could not utilize it. However two minutes later, Indian Oil’s Deedar Singh converted a penalty corner to make it 2-1.
In the 66th minute, BPCL equalised through Pundalik Bellary from left flank and two minutes later Gurpreet Singh struck the winning goal from a penalty corner conversion to shut the door on Indian Oil’s face.
The winners bagged Rs 2.50 lakh and Runners up received 1.50 lakh from Deputy Chief Minister, Punjab, Sukhbir Singh Badal.
