Hockey World Cup trophy unveiled in New Delhi

NEW DELHI: The trophy for the ensuing World Cup hockey tournament-2010 was unveiled here on Monday.

Designed by Bashir Moojid of Pakistani Army, the trophy consists of a silver cup with an intricate floral design, surmounted by a globe of the world in silver and gold, placed on a high blade base inlaid with ivory.

Atop these are replicas of hockey stick and a ball. Hero Honda Motors, India’s two-wheeler major which hosted this event also confirmed its corporate sponsorship of the World Cup 2010 tourney that is all set to bully-off on February 28 at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium in New Delhi.

Pawan Munjal, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, of Hero Honda Motors, urged the hockey players, administrators as well as the fans of the game to join hands to bring back the glory of Indian hockey.

“We as a company are doing our best, I know that there are other corporates who want to do their best, some governments are also trying to do their best…we only want you to come together as one – the administrators, the team and all of the people who are running hockey in the country and Hockey India to please come together and bring back the hockey to its lost glory,” Munjal added.

Munjal also mentioned that the company has signed three-young Indian golfers- Shiv Kapur, Gaganjeet Bhullar and Anirban Lahiri, in an attempt to promote multi-discipline sports in India.

“The idea here is that we are going to take care of everything as through the sponsorship. Then these young golfers focussing completely and exclusively on their game and try to get on these tours, try to do well on their tour and one day try to win one of the majors (PGA tournaments),” he said.

Hero Honda is the title sponsor of 1.5 million dollars Indian Open golf tournament.
