Moti Lal Nehru college win Shyam Lal memorial hockey tourney

NEW DLEHI: Moti Lal Nehru College (Evening) fought hard as they rallied to beat host Shyam Lal College 2-1 to win the inaugural Shyam Lal memorial invitational hockey tournament at the Shyam Lal College ground on Monday.

The two teams after displaying spectacular performance throughout the tournament were in their best of spirit and showed exemplary brilliance in the final which turned out to be the most competitive match of the tournament.

Shyam Lal boys dished out an attacking game right form the word go as Vishesh shot Shyam Lal College into lead as early in the sixth minute of the play.

Moti Lal Nehru College boys kept their composure despite an early setback and fought hard in search of an equaliser.

Moti Lal boys’ hard work soon reaped benefits as Balram restored parity for them just before the lemon-break. Both the teams were tied 1-1 at the half-time.

Shyam Lal boys tried their best to gain the lead but couldn’t convert the chances that came their way while Manish found the winner for Moti Lal Nehru College towards the closing stages of the game.

Moti Lal Nehru College’s Mukesh, who played brilliantly throughout the final, was rewarded with the man of the match award.

Former hockey Olympian & Arjuna Awardee Zafar Iqbal, chief guest, alongwith Nirmala Gupta, chairperson, Shyam Lal College governing body, gave away the trophies and cash prizes to the proud winners and runners-up teams.

Zafar congratulated both the teams for their performance and pointed out the prospects of many players to play at the national level.

Dr. MK Razdan, principal of Shyam Lal College promised that the tournament will become a regular feature and will take place every year. VS Jaggi, director of physical education, Shyam Lal College, thanked the teams and the players for their overall contribution and making the event a great success
